Less Stuff, More Space: My Spring Reset
It started with an exploding drawer of T-shirts, but now I’m clearing space in my mind, my phone, and my life. Why not join me and go BIG with your spring cleaning this year?

My Bank Holiday Mission began with a drawer full of T-shirts. Old ones - faded, stretched, some with cheesy logos - one or two holding vague sentimental value. But let’s be honest, most were very tired and just taking up space. To the extent that I couldn’t even squeeze my clean T-shirts - the ones I actually wear - into the drawer! It was time for a spring clean.
But what started as a simple wardrobe clear-out has quickly become something much bigger. Because as I sorted through drawers and bags and baskets of clothing I hadn’t worn in years, I realised something: I’m done with blindly inviting in and then holding the stuff the world shoves at us. The physical clutter, yes - but also the digital, emotional, and mental clutter that creeps in while we’re not looking.
And for women, this clutter comes particularly loaded. It’s not just things - it’s expectations. In days gone by, women were defined by domesticity and consumption. While men were encouraged to go out and build, invent, create - we got the housekeeping. The Victorian middle class woman’s raison d’être was making the home - and themselves - pretty. Oh, and “spending surplus income”. Later, of course, we were allowed into the world of work - where we were sold the dream of “having it all”. But the metric for success whilst now holding down the family AND a job was still decidedly consumerist - basically drowning your exhaustion in shiny new things that you could now pay for yourself. Homewares, makeup, courses, cookbooks, a better juicer, new pyjamas - and of course, a ‘signature scent.’
Not much has changed. In fact, it's ramped up.
Take beauty, for instance. When I was a teenager in the ‘80s, it was blue eyeshadow, mascara, maybe a Boots face mask if you were feeling fancy. These days? There are entire categories of products that didn’t even exist then. Primers. Pre-serums. Overnight masks. Skin cycling. Acid toners. Lash growth serums. It’s a full-time job just keeping up - and I haven’t! It ain’t broke, so I don’t need no unnecessary time-consuming ‘fixes’ thank you.
I already resent the ten-minute evening routine I do have - removing makeup, washing my face, slathering on eye cream. Add to that the nightly rigmarole of cleaning teeth-straightening aligners (which I’m nine months into) along with the 2 minute polish of my pearlies, and there’s no way I’m adding extra steps and expense to further delay the lure of my duvet.
And yet, the pressure persists. Beauty editors continually review the lush new launches - sharing how the latest cream/mask/spray etc. is a ‘game changer’. Influencers perform their 12-step bedtime routines like it’s a competitive sport. And these products keep flying off the shelves. So what are we sacrificing for all this self-maintenance?
Because time, of course, is a zero-sum game. These things don't just get added in - they replace. If we’re spending 15 extra minutes on our skincare or trawling through tabs for the next perfect life-enhancing course or downloading another “must-have” productivity app, what are we not doing? What’s quietly falling away?
Maybe it’s stillness. Maybe it’s space. Maybe it’s the thing that actually matters to us that we’re avoiding.
And this is where my clear-out is taking me now. Beyond the clothes, into my digital world and beyond. The apps I downloaded in a flurry of optimism but haven’t touched since. The open browser tabs promising transformation if I can just find the time to action their advice. The to-do list that grows like it’s being fed after midnight.
So this isn’t just a spring clean. It’s a reset.
A reclaiming of my time, my space, my energy. And crucially: my attention. Because every time I’m pulled toward another thing I “should” be doing - another product to add, another hack to try, another corner of my life to optimise - I’m reminded of the most radical choice I can make: to do less.
To be lighter.
I want fewer steps, fewer distractions, fewer inputs. I want more agility. More room to think. To breathe and adapt in line with my intuition. To feel.
That’s my mantra right now: less stuff, more agility.
And I’m curious where it’ll take me. Because as I’ve learned again and again (and maybe you have too), it’s never just about the drawer you’ve emptied or the skincare routine you’ve shortened. It’s about who you get to be when you’re not weighed down by the tasks and stuff we accrue on auto-pilot. When you stop letting the world decide what your time is worth - and start reclaiming it for yourself.
And this kind of clarity/action virtuous circle is exactly what comes with coaching. It’s no coincidence that I can move from overwhelm to insight to targeted action so swiftly - because I’ve done the work and know how to shift into self-leadership quickly. It’s incredibly liberating when you can identify what’s not working, then adopt a new approach and way of understanding with ease. It’s empowering and provides great relief as you navigate the many ways the world conspires to throw us off course.
Might that kind of clarity and support help you shift out of what’s keeping you stuck right now? Might your life be in need of a proper spring clean - or Midlife MOT as my coaching programme describes it?

Don’t miss this:
If you’re a regular reader of this newsletter, you might know that I recently became a breathwork facilitator under the amazing instruction of Max Strom. But my breathwork journey began over 4 years ago when my husband and I began the breath retention exercises as extolled by the now very famous Wim Hof. He has a great app for learning and guiding the breathing, as well as instructions and timers to support you into doing cold therapy too. At the moment he’s offering a significant 50% discount off his fundamentals course + premium version of the app + an online masterclass. Check out the youtube link above and his website for more information. But if you’re looking for a financial incentive to get into breathwork, this is a good one - so hurry as it won’t last much longer!
